The Jaipur-Agra National Highway-11 has gained notoriety as one of the deadliest roads in Rajasthan. Some 235 persons were killed until the end of May this year. A four-year-old girl was killed and actress Hema Malini was badly injured in the latest accident 3 days ago. The BJP MP from Mathura was on her way to Jaipur from Agra.
The total length of NH-11 is 531 km and as per police records about 472 accidents were reported till May on NH-11 in which 235 people were killed, while 505 people were injured.
In 2000, senior Congress leader and former Internal Affairs Minister Rajesh Pilot was killed in a road accident at Bhandana in his parliamentary constituency of Dausa and recently Congress Rajya Sabha member Ashq Ali Tak was injured in an accident at the same spot.
Overspeeding is the major concern on any national highway in the country. With shortage of manpower, the police department claims that it is not possible to keep a constant tab on speed limit on national highways but if drivers follow the speed limits properly, the accident rate can be brought down, added a senior official
