Polavaram oustees threaten suicide

he much publicised Polavaram project is in the news again, albeit for a different reason. The Polavaram displaced in East Godavari district on Tuesday intensified their agitation demanding proper rehabilitation package.When the district officials arrived at Angalur village on Tuesday morning to evacuate the villagers and hand over the land to the contractor for the construction of head-works and power house, the villagers threatened to commit suicide if they were forced to vacate their houses without being paid suitable compensation.Even as the revenue officials tried to demolish some houses under police security, 10 women from the village doused themselves in kerosene and threatened to set themselves on fire. Another woman died of stroke after witnessing the scenes.

The villagers threatened to move the court against the forcible evacuation. However, the officials went ahead with the demolition despite strong protests by the villagers.East Godavari District Collector Arun Kumar told media persons that Angalur village was very crucial in the Polavaram project construction and the villagers should cooperate with the administration in the smooth completion of the major project.The displaced were making demands which were not covered under the rehabilitation package, the Collector stated. They were already paid suitable compensation in 2007-08 itself and houses for them were also sanctioned under the Indira Awas Yojana. Though no one was living in the village, some persons were fomenting trouble soon after the works were taken up, he alleged. “Tribals are also being allotted land elsewhere,” the Collector added.
