Kim Kardashian’s mantra in life seems simple : give me attention. The media’s response to it, has also been simple : give her too much attention. In yet another risqué shoot, the photographer’s muse has become the media’s muse. However, having done this ad nauseam, what do people today have to say about Kim’s latest ‘sandy experiment’? Sofiya Sujad finds out.In an ideal world, there would be equality. There would be a righteous segregation of priorities and sensible media reporting. However, the world is not ideal and so we have Kim Kardashian splashed across various newspapers and magazines, every time she sneezes. For an upcoming episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, she’s posed almost naked in the desert. After having balanced a champagne glass on her derriere, Kim has now tried a different stunt to fascinate people.

The question is, are we still entertained and what impact has this had on the audience? Shreyans Dungarwal, a city-based photographer, vehemently comments, ‘’I do not find it a big deal.Her photoshoot is over-hyped. She is not the first person to do a bare-it-all shoot. There have been many other celebrities in the past who have done it. We have lots of celebrities in Bollywood also, who do these ‘very hot’ photo shoots. When you’ve got the body to flaunt, why not?’’ He adds, ‘’Boudoir (a woman's bedroom or private room for dressing or resting) photography is an art. It is important to separate sensuality from vulgarity because there is difference between art and pornography.

I have done many risqué shoots and made sure both the subject and myself were comfortable doing it. I tend to look at the photographed from the evolved perspective of a professional.’’People have now become used to the whole Kim-K naked-shoot/naked-dress trend and her efforts to up to the TRP’s of her show may actually fall flat. After a constant ‘’breaking of the internet’’ with these antics, Kim has repeatedly been lashed out at, by feminist groups. Sensual art, and artistic nudity is empowering. Not cheesy photographs of Kim vulgarising the entire concept. When Keira Knightley posed topless for a magazine, her purpose was well-defined. She wanted to make a radical statement about positive body-imaging-sans-photoshop. Kim, on the other hand, seems to cry out loud for attention with these gimmicks. It is this underlying intention that draws the line between sensuality and ‘’A-look-at-me, look-at-me’’ campaign.

When asked how such photo-shoots have been responsible in forwarding a sense of female objectification, Sandhya Luther, a feminist-Buddhist scholar and teacher, expresses, ‘’To call it objectification is an undervaluation. This is pathology. Of course, there is nothing wrong in wanting to look beautiful but this brand of beauty is an objectification of the female form that is deeply disempowering, both functionally and symbolically and inevitably, there is internalisation of this trend by women themselves, as self-objectification and self-hate.

Recently, a friend of mine in the film industry was telling me how 7-year old girls are being presented by their parents for screen tests in hyper-sexual forms in terms of clothing, movements, make-up. . ‘’An exaggerated mention of Kim reflects on yellow journalism.
